The Siyanda District Municipality hosted a 2010 Kick Off event on the 9th June to celebrate the 2010 Soccer World Cup with the rest of the world.
The event started off with a motorcade from the Danie Kuys Stadium through town and through Paballelo. Government departments, NGO’s and other stakeholders formed part of the motorcade. The event was held at the Paballelo Stadium, and was well attended by various communities from as far as Riemvasmaak, Rietfontein and Swartkopdam.
The Executive Mayor in her keynote address highlighted the importance of South Africa hosting the World Cup that it is a historic event on the African continent and as such we should all be putting our support behind the National Team and the Local Organising Committee. She indicated that the World Cup contributed to the building and upgrading of stadiums, roads and airports and this in turn led to the creation of sustainable jobs and the economic growth of our country.
The 2010 Soccer World Cup has also brought together different races, as was seen during the Super 14 Final which was held in Soweto, support for the rugby teams went beyond race and the true spirit of nation building could be felt. The World Cup carries the same weight if not more and it will bring the country together.
The entertainment for the day included choirs, DJ’s from as far as Kimberley and dance groups from all over the district.
